Project Duration: 2027 – 2029

The ZERAMICS project aims to decarbonize the ceramic industry by developing a new generation of kilns integrating CO2 capture, maximizing CO2 concentration while minimizing modifications to existing infrastructure.

The captured CO2 will be valorized through the production of CO2-derived calcium carbonate for low-carbon ceramic bodies and methane as a substitute for natural gas, promoting circular carbon utilization and reducing the sector’s carbon footprint.

In collaboration with INDUZIR, Net4CO2 will develop the next generation of kilns integrating in situ CO2 capture. Following optimization in collaboration with CTCV, the technology will be demonstrated in an industrial environment using existing kilns at partner facilities with distinct operational challenges. The captured CO2 will then be converted into methane and reinjected into the kilns as a fuel, promoting circularity and reducing reliance on fossil natural gas.

  • Next-generation kilns with in situ CO2 capture
Development of energy-efficient kilns integrating CO2 capture, achieving higher CO2 concentrations with minimal modifications to existing equipment. Captured CO2 will be converted into synthetic natural gas (SNG) for kiln fuel substitution and calcium carbonate for low-carbon ceramic raw materials. The technology will be optimized and validated at pre-industrial and industrial scales with CTCV, SANINDUSA and PRIMUS.
  • Low-footprint ceramic bodies
Integration of CO2-derived calcium carbonate into ceramic formulations to develop lower-carbon ceramic bodies, reducing the environmental footprint of raw materials.
  • Low-carbon ceramic products
Development and validation of ceramic products incorporating CO2-derived materials, promoting circular carbon utilization, resource efficiency and sustainable manufacturing across the ceramic industry.
